At AWB Nigeria, we are not just astronomers—we are a movement. A vibrant, inclusive, and evolving community of dreamers, thinkers, observers, and educators who believe that the night sky belongs to everyone.
We are teachers in rural schools, students in crowded classrooms, engineers with curiosity, and children with homemade telescopes. We are united not by equipment—but by wonder.
Our Identity
We are the Nigerian chapter of Astronomers Without Borders, a global organization operating in over 140 countries. But our roots go deeper—we are born from the soils of Nigeria, built on the dreams of those who believe that science and imagination are national resources.
Through every telescope we set up in a village square, and every constellation we explain to a curious child, we affirm:
“Science is not a privilege. It is a birthright.”
Our Community Is…
- Multi-generational: We work with preschoolers and professors, combining play-based learning with rigorous science.
- Multilingual: From Hausa to Yoruba, Igbo to Pidgin, we speak the languages of the people—and of the stars.
- Multi-sectoral: Our members are teachers, engineers, medical workers, artists, farmers, and poets—because astronomy is for everyone.
We Gather to Learn, Share, and Inspire
What binds us is not formal education or background. It is this shared passion:
- To turn the telescope toward the Moon and hear someone gasp, “I’ve never seen that before.”
- To hear a girl in an IDP camp ask, “Can someone like me become a scientist?”
- To gather with strangers under the stars and realize that we are all made of the same elements—hydrogen, carbon, dreams.
We meet in:
- School yards
- City rooftops
- Online webinars
- Remote villages
- Public parks during solar eclipses
Each gathering becomes a spark. And each spark is a step toward enlightenment.
