Astronomers Without Borders Nigeria (AWB Nigeria) is more than just a science outreach organization—it’s a national movement dedicated to democratizing access to space science, nurturing young minds, and transforming how communities in Nigeria engage with the cosmos.
Guided by the motto “One People, One Sky”, AWB Nigeria brings the universe closer to the people—especially those in underserved, rural, and underrepresented communities. Whether through hands-on telescope sessions, classroom workshops, or national campaigns, the organization stands at the intersection of education, empowerment, and exploration.
Our Mission
AWB Nigeria exists to:
- Spark curiosity about the universe among Nigerians of all ages.
- Break down the barriers between science and society.
- Empower youth, especially girls and marginalized groups, to pursue careers in STEM.
- Use astronomy as a unifying tool to foster peace, learning, and development.
Through partnerships with schools, government agencies, and international astronomy networks, AWB Nigeria translates complex space science into engaging, understandable, and transformative experiences.
Where We Work
AWB Nigeria reaches across:
- Urban classrooms in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt
- Rural villages where science education is scarce
- Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps where hope is needed most
- Public parks and festivals, creating open-air observatories for all
Since its inception, the organization has impacted over 100,000 students, trained hundreds of teachers, and conducted more than 300 community outreach events.

Global and National Collaboration
AWB Nigeria is the official Nigerian chapter of Astronomers Without Borders, a global non-profit organization with members in over 140 countries. It also partners with:
- Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA)
- International Astronomical Union (IAU)
- Vixen Co., Ltd. (Japan)
- INAF (Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics)
- The Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU–OAD)
These collaborations allow for sharing of tools, training, and global best practices in astronomy outreach and citizen science.
Why Astronomy?
Astronomy is a gateway to all sciences. It teaches critical thinking, mathematics, observation, and wonder. It also connects people across cultures, religions, and languages—reminding us we all live on the same small planet orbiting the same Sun.
“We use the stars not just to teach science—but to inspire identity, unity, and hope.”
— AWB Nigeria National Coordinator

The Future We See
As Nigeria’s space science momentum builds, AWB Nigeria aims to:
- Establish permanent astronomy learning hubs in every geopolitical zone
- Collaborate on regional space research with other African nations
- Expand astronomy into public health, agriculture, and environmental awareness
- Inspire the next generation of scientists, astronauts, and changemakers
AWB Nigeria is not just showing people the stars. It is lighting a fire of discovery and empowerment that will shape the nation’s future.
Because when you give someone a glimpse of Saturn’s rings or the Moon’s craters, you’re not just teaching astronomy—you’re revealing a universe of possibilities.
One People. One Sky. One Vision. AWB Nigeria.
